What is Assessment?
Assessment is matriculation component designed to make students more successful by ensuring they have the appropriate skills to succeed in English and math courses.
English
Assessment
The Assessment Center offers two types of English assessments online:
- English as a Native Language (ENL)
- English as a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Native Language (ENL)
The ENL assessment is offered online and designed to students whose primary language is English. Students are assessed in Reading Comprehension and Sentence Structure.

as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL assessment is offered online and designed for students who want to learn English. Students are assessed in Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning and Language Usage.
Math
Assessment
The Assessment Center offers the math assessment online. The math assessment is adaptive. Students can place in one of three math level:

What
is Computerized Adaptive?
In computerized adaptive testing the computer selects the test questions administered to the student. The computer adapts each test to the examinee. The computer keeps track of a student’s performance on each test item and uses this information to select the next item to be administered or whether the student will move on to the next level of the test or not.
Chemistry
Readiness Exam
The California Chemistry Readiness Diagnostic Test (Chemistry Readiness Exam) is a Chemistry 101 placement exam. Students must score a 23 or better to pass. Students who score below a 23 must enroll in the required pre-requisite courses. Students who pass the exam must meet the math pre-requisites prior to enrolling in Chemistry 101. For further information please speak with a counselor.
Math
Competency Exam
The Los Angeles Community College District Math Competency Exam is designed to meet the Math 115 graduation requirement for the Associates Degree. The Math Competency Exam may not be used to fulfill math prerequisites. Students who wish to enroll in higher-level math courses must take the math assessment. Students must score a 15 or better to pass. Students, who score below a 15, must enroll in Math 115. You may only test once. No retests are permitted.
Ability
to Benefit
The Ability to Benefit exam is offered online and designed for students who want to apply for Financial Aid, but are non-high school graduates. Students who want to qualify for Financial Aid must show proof that they completed high school or pass all three sections of the Ability to Benefit Exam. The three sections you must pass are:
- Reading Comprehension
- Sentence Structure
- Arithmetic
You must be 18 years or older to take the exam. We also offer an ESL version of the Ability to Benefit Exam; please call our office for more information.
